Rosemary Stimola: The Risky Business of Children's Publishing - An Agent's View

Rosemary Stimola formed Stimola Literary Studio in 1997.   She represents many great authors, including Suzanne Collins, Amanda Driscoll, Thanhha Lai.

Rosemary Stimola grew up in a place where she was never asked to question, imagine, or step outside the box, but she was a reader.  In her earliest years, she was enthralled with stories about witches, giants, magic, etc.  She was empowered by their strength and resolve. She read everything she could get her hands on.

Publishing has come a long way and things have changed dramatically.  The last ten years have propelled us into bottom line publishing (e-books, film rights, merchandising).  The stakes are higher.

How does an aspiring author navigate the rough and risky seas in publishing?  Sometimes it starts with a personal contact.  There is nothing like face-to-face interchange. More often than most, it begins with a query letter.  More often, the letter is given a quick scan, not a full read.

Query letter ingredients:
  • The connection
  • The pitch
  • The bio

Each should be no more than a paragraph long, chronologically ordered to put your best foot forward.

Don't take an overly academic or analytic approach.  This is not a teacher's manual that you are presenting.  Voice is important.
