Don't Be Weary, It's Just a Query

Jen Rofe is an agent with the Andrea Brown Literary Agency.

Picture Book queries:

Only include what is relevant

It's a very rare case when an agent wants to take on a picture book writer who has only one book.  It is in your best interest to have more than one that is ready to go.

If you are also working in another genre that the agent represents, it is worth it to mention it.

Middle grade:

Don't give away the ending!  Just give a snapshot!

It's always helpful to mention the age of your protagonist.

Young Adult:

It's okay if a query is in a different order if the same information comes across.

Don't compare your book to the biggest book successes.
Your query letter SHOULD be hard to write.

Jen also went over five query do's.   For more, sign up for the SCBWI Midsouth conference next year!
